Award-winning author and filmmaker to deliver Loyola's Hanway Lecture in Global Studies
Raj Patel, Ph.D., an award-winning author, filmmaker, and research professor at The University of Texas at Austin, will deliver Â鶹Porn’s Hanway Lecture in Global Studies on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. in McGuire Hall. An expert on the world food system, Patel will present “How Your Tastes Were Made and How to Change Them.”
Patel conducts research on food systems and alternatives, world ecology, and the international political economy. He co-directed the 2021 award-winning documentary, “The Ants & the Grasshopper,” about climate change, farming, and social justice and the same year co-authored the book, “Inflamed: Deep Medicine and the Anatomy of Injustice,” about health and colonization.
A speaker on hunger and the global food crisis, Patel has testified to governments in the United States, United Kingdom, and European Union and co-hosted the NPR podcast “The Secret Ingredient.” In addition to articles in academic journals, he has contributed to the Financial Times, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, and San Francisco Chronicle. His earlier books include “Stuffed and Starved: The Hidden Battle for the World Food System” and “The Value of Nothing,” a New York Times and international bestseller.
Patel received the James Beard Foundation Leadership Award in 2016. He holds degrees from the University of Oxford, the London School of Economics, and Cornell University.
