"Fostering Community Development and Neighbordhood Resilience in North Baltimore" presented by Gia Grier McGinnis, Executive Director, Neighborhood Resilience and Community Engagement
Dr. McGinnis discussed the meaning and importance of PBCE, or place-based community engagement, including aspects of listening to residents, sharing leadership, and working towards long-term goals instead of providing short-term solutions. She elaborated on Loyola’s history of working with neighborhoods along York Road, supporting initiatives like the York Road Initiative, Govans Farmers Market, partnerships with local schools and organizations, and community needs assessments. This talk emphasized the power of community and the importance of fostering meaningful community development. With resident involvement and reciprocal partnerships, helping surrounding neighborhoods allows them to address immediate needs but also continue growing and thriving over time.
