Welcome From the Department Chair
Dr. Brianne Higgins Roos
Welcome to the Department of Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences (SLHS) at Loyola University
Maryland! As a double Greyhound alumna and now department chair, my connection to
Loyola runs deep. I believe wholeheartedly in the work we do here—work grounded in
the Jesuit commitment to educating the whole person. That commitment shapes how we
teach, how we mentor, and how we care for one another as a community. We place students
at the center of everything we do, preparing them not only to succeed professionally
but to carry Loyola’s values with them into the world.
One of the things I hear most often from students is how supported they feel here. We value close advising, meaningful relationships, and classrooms and clinical settings where students are truly known. Our undergraduate curriculum offers flexibility, choice, and early pre-clinical experiences so students can explore their interests and discern what comes next. At the graduate level, our curriculum builds depth and confidence through rigorous coursework, integrated clinical training, and close faculty mentorship that prepares students for impactful professional practice. Loyola SLHS faculty bring a wide range of clinical and research perspectives and genuinely enjoy working alongside students—whether in class, in the clinic, or on research projects. The academic and clinical accomplishments of our undergraduate and graduate students speak to this culture of curiosity, engagement, and growth.
At the heart of our department is a close-knit community that stays connected well beyond graduation. I warmly invite you to visit campus, meet our faculty and students, and spend time in our undergraduate space in the Fernandez Center and graduate space at the Loyola Clinical Centers. There is an energy at Loyola that’s hard to describe but easy to feel, and I welcome you to join us!
Sincerely,

Brianne Higgins Roos, EdD, CCC-SLP
