Internships are the best way for students to gain the work experience necessary to find a job during college or after graduation. Many of the internships in this database may provide the internship credit you need for graduation. Please use The Career Center as an additional resource for internships.

Description: The Summer Internship Program (SIP) provides experience in biomedical and/or public health research to students from all backgrounds - including students from racial/ethnic groups underrepresented in science and medicine, students from low-income/underserved backgrounds, and students with disabilities. The program provides research exposure for those interested in potential careers in science, medicine, and public health. There are 15 distinct research opportunities available under the SIP umbrella. Each branch of the Summer Internship Program is administered separately and supports different stipend levels, with some additional tailoring of program content to fit each division’s focus. Hauber Summer Research Fellowship

Description: 鶹Porn undergraduate students in the field of Natural and Applied Sciences interested in working side-by-side with a faculty mentor to conduct research in their area of interest are encouraged to apply. For many students, Hauber fellowships have been a stepping stone to campus and national awards, co-authorship on presentations and/or manuscripts, and entry into professional or graduate school. Hauber Research Fellows also have the opportunity to present their research posters on more than one occasion during the 2023-24 academic year. Students gain valuable knowledge in the realm of research while faculty receive help with their projects and the pleasure of working directly with students.

Description: The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) is dedicated to documenting and celebrating African American history and culture. Located in Washington, DC we are the only national museum that tells the American story through the African American lens. The museum amplifies voices too often marginalized or silenced—and uplifts the African American experience of hope and resiliency, of struggle and pain, of triumph and joy. One of the Museum’s most powerful tools for giving voice to the African American experience is our Oral History Initiative, which is dedicated to documenting, interpreting, and preserving the African American experience through the medium of oral history. 

 

The Oral History Intern will support the Oral History Initiative (located in the Office of Digital Strategies and Engagement) at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) by participating in the Social Justice Oral History Conversations Project. This project is designed to capture intergenerational oral histories from veteran and youth activists. The intern will be trained by the oral history initiative coordinator to conduct research, prepare questions, and conduct a conversational oral history with a veteran social justice activist. The intern, between the ages of 18 and 29, shall possess a background in the study of African American history and culture and experience in social justice activism. A background in oral history is not required. Training will be provided. Limited travel may also be required.

Description: The Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) is an intensive, nine-week internship for undergraduates entering the summer before their final year, semester, or quarter of study. It's designed to provide research experience and mentorship for students interested in biomedical research. Under the guidance of a faculty mentor, interns will complete an independent research project and present their findings at a competitive poster session.

Description: The NSIP is an 11-week summer internship for undergraduate students interested in cancer research. The program provides integrated research, educational and clinical experiences that emphasize the translation of laboratory discoveries into clinical applications and inspire the next generation of cancer researchers and physician-scientists.

Interns admitted to the NSIP receive a competitive support package including financial assistance for interstate travel to the University of Maryland Baltimore and a living allowance. Housing at UMB and nearby 鶹Porn is offered at a reduced cost. The 2023 NSIP will begin on May 22, 2023 and conclude on August 4, 2023.

Description: Internships provide guided learning experiences consisting of hands-on training, mentoring, attendance at educational events, and cultivation of contacts for the next generation of researchers, scholars, curators, and other museum, library, preservation, and heritage professionals – individuals who will assume the mantle of identifying, documenting, curating, and digitizing treasured artifacts that reflect African American history and culture.

Description: Summer programs at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) provide an opportunity to spend a summer working at the NIH side-by-side with some of the leading scientists in the world, in an environment devoted exclusively to biomedical research (At the NIH "biomedical research" includes everything from behavioral and social sciences, through biology and chemistry, to physics, mathematical modeling, computational biology, and biostatistics). Internships generally cover a minimum of eight weeks, with students arriving at the NIH in June. The NIH Institutes/Centers and the Office of Intramural Training & Education (OITE) sponsor a wide range of summer activities including an orientation to help interns get off to a good start, Summer Lectures featuring distinguished NIH investigators, career/professional development workshops, wellness activities, and Summer Poster Day.

College internship positions are available year-round in many departments throughout the Aquarium.
