Self-Care

Self-limited illnesses are healed by the body's immune system and can be treated at home without seeing a medical provider. This type of illness is often referred to as needing to "run its course". Even though these illnesses are self-limited, they can still be contagious and make you feel quite sick. Treatment for these illnesses include self-care for symptoms, limiting spread to others, and understanding when to seek care from a medical provider.

Self-Care Note

If you feel you have a self-limiting illness and need to miss an event, class or activity, complete a self-care note. This note can be used to communicate your absence with instructors, supervisors or others. Please be aware this note does not necessarily excuse your absence from class. Decisions about ability to make-up classwork and assignments are made solely by the instructor.

Please Note – this form is not intended for a student who has absences related to a disability and the Office of Disability and Accessibility Services (DAS) has approved them for the accommodation of attendance policy modifications. Additionally, if you are a student with a documentation disability that involves random or cyclical acute episodes that may occasionally impact your ability to attend class, you might want to register with DAS.

Self Care Note Form

Falsifying information on a self-care note would be a violation of the Loyola University Honor Code and may result in penalties.

After completing the self-care note, use the steps and guides below to start feeling better.

Step 1: Understand Your Health Condition and Symptoms

Choose the self-care guide that most closely matches your symptoms and read it carefully.

Step 2: Choose the Correct Self-Care Measure

Treatment of self limiting illnesses can include rest and over-the-counter (OTC) medications.

Medications and other self-care supplies can be purchased from several Nearby Pharmacies.

Step 3: Know When to Seek Help from a Medical Provider

Review the self-care guide for your health condition to determine when to seek help from a medical provider.
